A New Beginning

Posted on Mon Sep 28th, 2020 @ 8:52pm by Lieutenant Commander Rayen

630 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Refit and Restock

Once the captain gave the command for all ship's personnel to leave, Rayen returned to his cabin and retreieved the bags he had already packed, and headed to the transporter room.

His hope was to spend two weeks at the academy in an advanced command program, on the off chance that he's approached about an opening for an executive officer.

After that, he planned on spending two weeks by going back to his ancestral lands and return to his roots and live off the desert.

He walked to the hanger deck and boarded a shuttle that already held 6 people heading to Earth for a long deserved vacation. He sat in the copilots chair because no co-pilot had been assigned. He watched through the forward windows as the shuttle lifted off, cleared the ship, and headed down to Earth, San Francisco.

When they landed, everyone gathered their things and walked out of the shuttle into the bright sunlight. Some headed to the Academys transporters to head to the 4 corners of the globe.

He was greeted by an Academy cadet would was assigned to escort him to the main building. They headed to the Academy building, where he signed in and was shown to his quarters, that he would call home for 2 weeks.

His schedule had already been posted on his computer. Classes would begin at 0900 hours, covering a wide variety of subjects. Lunch would be at 1130 hours and the last class would end at 1630 hours.

He was going to maintain his usual exercise schedule, arriving in the gym at 0600 hours, and finishing at 0800 hours.

He hoped to see some familiar faces in these classes, class mates from when he was first at the academy.

The following day he went to the orientation class, and was told what the course would be, focusing on command structure and duties.

After the orientation class, the group got down to work.

Everything consisted of simulated bridge work.....taking over command.....being in a battle.....working at the other bridge positions in case one of the crew was injured or killed.

Then there were written tests, history of Starfleet.....famous battles....the Prime Directive and of course, The Kirk Factors.

At the end of the 2nd week, Rayen was getting ready to pack his bags and leave to finish his leave, when he was once again, summoned to the commandants office. When he got there, in addition there was a Captain he didn't recognize.

The commandant stood up. "Commander Rayen, this is Captain Miles Davies of the USS Zodiac." Rayen and the captain shook hands.

Everyone sat down.

The commandant continued. "Commander, I asked you here because of all the others taking this course, you have showed the most promise. Captain Davies is in need of a first officer...and I am recommending you."

Rayen was caught off guard and surprised at that statement. "I am honored admiral, captain." Rayen sat silently for a few seconds. "Captain. What is your current mission?"

"We're going to explore the far reaches of the Beta Quadrant, commander. I have a young crew...inexperienced...I need someone with a firm hand to keep them in line. Both the admiral and myself agree that you're the person to do it."

Rayen always judged himself to be a good judge of people. He trusted Davies. "Then I accept, sir."

The admiral stood, and when he did, Davies and Rayne also stood up. "I'll break the news to Captain Connor on the Aldrin, I'm sure she'll be sorry to see you go." He picked up a box and walked over tp Rayen. He opened the box and took out a Commander's pip and pinned it on him. "Comgratulations, commander."

((This is my goodbye post....I won't be simming with you fine people anymore.))
