Simon and Sam had not long entered the party with Simon wearing a clean uniform and Sam wearing a blue silk dress as he had been overseeing tonight's festivities before changing into a fresh uniform, he said to Sam” Good crowd here tonight don't you think Sam?” As they were still none the wiser as to who had spiked their drinks at the last party they had attended. As people started to mingle and mix, Simon hoped that the bar Staff would not get overrun as he had made sure that it was well stocked.
Sam looked back at the father of her unborn child, she said “This looks brilliant Simon, you have put on a good show,” after what they had just been through in the past few months as she took a cold drink from a waitress that was doing her rounds, she asked you having a drink Simon?” as she might have guessed that he would be back on Gamma shift shortly.
Simon replied, “Not sure if I can tonight as I might be back on Gamma” as he looked back at Sam as he hated the night shift, but it was the experience that came with being on the shift like he was, as he picked up a glass of water and watched the festivities go smoothly.
Christof watched as Simon and his lady walked in. He excused himself from those at his table, leaving Daniel to speak with Allyson and walked over to the couple. “Hey, Simon, Sam, how are you two doing?” He said with a jovial tone in his voice and a smile on his face. He pointed to a table. “Let’s sit for a minute and talk. Okay?”
“Sure, Sam could do with taking the weight off of her feet,” replied Simon as he looked back at Sam who looked back at him with a short smile, he continued, “After you Sir,” being formal in front of Sam and showing respect to the senior officer.
“Simon, we are not on duty right now, you can drop the sirs and such right now. I’m just Christof now.” Takes a table and holds a chair for Sam to sit in and then waits for Simon to sit first and sits last. His Abuela would kill him if he didn’t use all of his manners at all times. “So, how did you like filling in for me while I was in sickbay?”
“ I feel that I handled what was thrown at me well,” replied Simon as he knew that not being formal did not sit with him well, but since Christof had said it was ok then he would use the officers first name, “My report is on your desk Christof to read at your leisure,” as he guessed that he was being evaluated . But why was he? He wondered, glancing quickly at Sam.
Christof took a sip of his bright blue drink that looked like Romulan ale, but wasn’t, as his drink had white swirling around in it. “Well, Simon, I’ve been thinking. Since you and Sam have decided to move in together and are starting a family together, maybe I would put both of you on Alpha shift now, but down in secondary ops, rather than on the bridge. If you think you can handle that…” He offered and took another sip of his drink.
Simon looked back at Sam who knew that Alpha would give them more time after shift and gave Simon a nudge in the ribs, Simon responded formally. “Yes Sir, we would gladly take you up on your offer.” As he knew that he could relax tonight. He asked “So when do we start Christof?”
Chuckling softly. “You begin tomorrow morning. And with this move, comes a promotion. The Commodore has approved it.” He hands the new pip to Simon. “Congratulations, Lieutenant junior grade.” He then reached out and helped Simon put the new pip on and smiled at him and shook his hand. “Now, enjoy yourself and I’ll meet with you in the morning, 0800, my office, and I will explain your duties.” Christof then left them alone to celebrate.
“Yes Sir,” replied Simon as Sam reached over and gave him a kiss on the cheek smiling back at him as she knew her parents would be happy with Simon’s Promotion to Lieutenant Jg. She said “Congratulations Simon, I cannot wait to tell mom and dad,” taking a sip of her drink.
“So, am I hon so am I.” replied Simon as he started to enjoy the evening with a smile on his face as he now no longer had an awkward shift pattern, now he had an easier time and more time with Sam in the evening.
