Special Gathering
Captain’s Log
Commodore Mardel Sharon-Connor
USS Aldrin

Mardel was in her ready room, and they were still a day out from Gamma Vetris IV, when the message arrived. She was informed by Christof that there was an incoming transmission marked for her eyes only and she told him to transfer it to her ready room. She opened the channel when the beep informed her it had been transferred.

She recognized the young woman on the other side and she smiled. “Hello, Mardel, it’s been a while since we last met. I hope my brother isn’t driving you insane. Anyway, I had contact with one of the clan members while we were on Orion and he wanted me to give you and someone called Larie Grimes a message. His name was Gerenis and he said that you two needed to contact the wise ones. I already sent a message to this Larie person and I hope she got it. Anyway, I have to get off the channel, we are getting ready to depart Orion. But if you ask me, something big is brewing, I can feel it in the air.”

“Thank you for the message, Isabel. I’ll pass on your hello to Christof and he is doing well in his position. I am happy to have him aboard. Larie is my younger sister and she is married to an officer on the Excelsior but she is a civilian. Good luck and I will do it. And I know Larie will do it as well.”

Lieutenant Isabel Ramirez nodded and signed off and Mardel sat back in her chair. She knew who Gerenris was, so did Larie, but Larie didn’t know he was also their brother, their only brother as their mother only had three children. He was a wise one in his own clan. Mardel really didn’t like the timing on this, it was too close to the encounter with the Syndicate and she knew they were somehow involved in this. She just wasn’t sure how or why.

She called Dean to her ready room. When Dean arrived, she had him sit down. “I am going to be unavailable for a few days. You are in command of the ship until then. I have transferred the mission data to your computer in your office. I’m sorry to do this to you, but it is very important.” She was sure that Dean had a million questions, but he didn’t ask them, he just nodded.

She let him go and called Daniel into her ready room. When he came in, he gave her a soft kiss and she smiled at him. “Daniel, I have had contact from my brother. I need to perform a ceremony that is going to take a few days. You won’t be able to contact me or interrupt me and Dean will have command of the ship while I’m doing this. Please take care of the children and if you need help, ask Camia, she loves to watch our children.” Daniel looked at his wife and nodded. “Thank you, Daniel. And no, you can’t ask questions, this is wise ones’ business.” Daniel nodded again and when she stood, he embraced her and kissed her again. She returned the embrace and kiss and then told him to return to duty. She then sent a message to Starfleet Command, informing them that she would be unavailable for a few days as she needed some time to recover from the last mission and would be asleep, and that Dean would be the one to contact. Then she left the ready room and left the bridge.

In her quarters, she gave each of her children and kiss and told them she would be away for a few days and that Daddy and Auntie Camia and Uncle James would be taking care of them. Then she programmed the holonannies to keep the children away from the ceremonial chamber she had built into her quarters.

Mardel went into the bathroom and started to prepare herself for the ceremony. First she purged everything in her stomach and emptied her bowels. Then she took an extremely hot shower and scrubbed her skin until it was bright green and tingled with the scrubbing. Then she left the bathroom, wrapped in a large towel and entered her quarters and then to the door that was always kept locked and led to the ceremonial room. She dropped the towel on the wrack and then opened the door and walked in, closing and locking it behind her, sealing her off from everyone else on the ship for the time being.

In the room, she went to a cupboard and took out a few items and set them up around her and then sat down in the middle of the circle she had created around her and began. She meditated to clear her mind and body of all else and sought the clarity that came from listening to the Universe. As she thought about it, no one was able to connect to the Universe faster or deeper than Larie and Mardel took that to mean that she was the chosen one. But that thought detracted from what she needed to do and she concentrated harder for the clarity she would need.

There was no way for her to tell time in the ceremony chamber, so she was unsure how long it took for her body to fully relax into the needed clarity and she was able to feel that connection to the Universe needed for this form of communication. If she had known the time, it had taken her almost twenty hours to achieve the needed state of mind and body to enter into the communication link.

Light surrounded her and she found herself standing under the sacred tree and the rest of the wise ones from Orion were all there as well. She looked around and nodded to her mother and brother and she could hardly look at Larie, she was burning so bright. Then the Universe pulled everyone into rapport with the tree, each other, and the Universe. For a moment, Mardel wished she could see what everyone else saw and feel whatever everyone else felt. But that was not a gift granted to the Orions from the Universe, and as she thought about it, it was probably best that way or there would be even more battles and more deaths and the people would have gone extinct by self destruction. She felt the Universe give her approval for understanding that detail and the wisdom of withholding that particular gift. She felt guilty for not concentrating on what the Universe was imparting to everyone and she felt that the Universe understood that as well.

Then the Universe made known to everyone what was required of each of them in the upcoming months and years. It was unusual for the Universe to map out such plans and share them with the Wise Ones on Orions. Mardel blanched at what was required of her, but as she thought about it, she realized that it was well within her reach and it wasn’t as difficult as some of the others’ tasks. She couldn’t even imagine what was required of Larie, as no one could see all that she had seen. But they all knew that she was given more than they and none of them begrudged her that distinction. They all saw how brightly she burned and how deep it went. Larie was almost transparent and the light shone through her like she was glass and was holding the light and not just filled with it. Mardel, and the others, wondered if Larie knew this about herself. They wouldn’t be the one to tell her, they would leave that to the Universe to take care of and the Universe approved of this plan.

Then the light faded and when it was gone, everyone was back in their own ceremonial chambers. Mardel would have to call Larie and make sure that everything was okay with her. But that could wait. She needed to finish up here and then get some water and sleep so her body could heal from the past while. She would look on the chrono for how long she had been gone. So she cleaned up the items and put them away, holding onto the walls as she was very dizzy from lack of water and sleep. The weakness from lack of food was easy enough to overcome until the other needs were handled. Fasting for a week at a time wasn’t unusual for the Wise Ones on Orion. Then she left the ceremonial chambers and locked them behind her and then stumbled to the bed and fell into it. She rolled over and using the replicator built into the headboard of the bed she shared with her husband, she got a large glass of water and drank it and then curled up and went to sleep.
